Custom Hair System vs Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
BeforeAfterThe short answer
SMP is a haircut decision disguised as a hair-loss decision
SMP is excellent at what it does — a clean shaved-head look with a defined hairline, no maintenance routine, nothing to remove. If you are happy wearing your head shaved, it is genuinely low-hassle and worth considering.
But it is pigment, not hair. There is no length, no texture and nothing to run your fingers through, and it only reads correctly at stubble length — so it commits you to that haircut for years. A patch gives you hair you can style. Which one is right depends entirely on the look you want, not on which is technically better.
Side by side
| Custom Hair System | Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $600 – $1,800 | $1,500 – $4,000 across 2–4 sessions |
| Timeline | Turnaround: 12–15 days for a fully custom order, or same-day with a stock base | Time to result: Immediate after the final session |
| Best for | Men with crown or mid-scalp thinning who want density back without surgery or medication. | Anyone happy to wear a shaved head who wants the hairline back. |
| Wrong choice if | A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now. | Anyone who wants hair they can run their fingers through or style with length. |
The case for each
Custom Hair System
A made-to-order hair system cut to a mould of your own scalp, matched to your existing hair in colour, density, curl and hairline shape. Non-surgical, reversible and ready to wear the same day it is fitted.
In its favour
- Scalp template taken by hand, so the system sits flat with no lifting at the edges
- Hair matched from a cut sample of your own hair — colour, grey percentage, wave and shine
- Choose skin, mono, lace or a hybrid base depending on how much you sweat
- Fitted, cut and styled in one sitting so you walk out finished
Against it
- A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now.
- It is also the wrong purchase if you are in the early diffuse stage with hair still covering the area. A system bonded over living hair means bonding adhesive against follicles that are still working. In that situation we usually recommend waiting, or a clip-in topper if you want coverage without commitment.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
Cosmetic tattooing of tiny dots across the scalp to mimic the shadow of closely shaved stubble, or to add the illusion of density between thinning hairs.
In its favour
- No maintenance routine, nothing to remove, nothing to service
- Excellent for a clean shaved-head look with a defined hairline
- Works as a shadow behind thinning hair to reduce visible scalp
Against it
- It is not hair. There is no length, no texture and no styling
- Committing to a permanently short haircut, because it only reads correctly at stubble length
- Pigment fades warm over years and needs a refresh
How we would decide it with you
At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.
We sell hair systems, so read the verdict above with that in mind — but we turn away work regularly when the alternative is genuinely the better answer, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid us.
Still not sure which?
Tell us your stage of loss and we'll give you a straight recommendation between these two — including when the answer is neither.
Custom Hair System vs Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) — FAQs
- Custom Hair System or Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) — which is better?
- Neither is universally better. SMP is excellent at what it does — a clean shaved-head look with a defined hairline, no maintenance routine, nothing to remove. If you are happy wearing your head shaved, it is genuinely low-hassle and worth considering.
- Which costs more, hair system or SMP?
- Custom Hair System: $600 – $1,800. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP): $1,500 – $4,000 across 2–4 sessions. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
- Can I switch from one to the other later?
- In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
