Custom Hair System vs Women's Hair Topper
BeforeAfterThe short answer
The same technology, built around different hair-loss patterns
A patch assumes a defined bald area with healthy hair around it and is usually bonded. A topper assumes a widened parting with diffuse thinning and is usually clipped, because the hair underneath is still there and still growing.
In practice this splits along gender because the loss patterns do. Male pattern loss creates the bald area a patch is built for; female pattern loss thins the parting a topper is built for. What decides it is the pattern, not the label.
Side by side
| Custom Hair System | Women's Hair Topper | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $600 – $1,800 | $700 – $2,200 |
| Turnaround | 12–15 days for a fully custom order, or same-day with a stock base | 12–15 days fully custom |
| Best for | Men with crown or mid-scalp thinning who want density back without surgery or medication. | Women with diffuse thinning who still have hair around the sides and back. |
| Wrong choice if | A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now. | A topper does not work if the hair around your thinning area is no longer strong enough to hold clips. Clip attachment relies on healthy anchor hair, and forcing clips into fragile hair causes exactly the traction damage you are trying to avoid. If your loss is diffuse across the whole scalp, a full wig is the safer route. |
The case for each
Custom Hair System
A made-to-order hair system cut to a mould of your own scalp, matched to your existing hair in colour, density, curl and hairline shape. Non-surgical, reversible and ready to wear the same day it is fitted.
In its favour
- Scalp template taken by hand, so the system sits flat with no lifting at the edges
- Hair matched from a cut sample of your own hair — colour, grey percentage, wave and shine
- Choose skin, mono, lace or a hybrid base depending on how much you sweat
- Fitted, cut and styled in one sitting so you walk out finished
Against it
- A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now.
- It is also the wrong purchase if you are in the early diffuse stage with hair still covering the area. A system bonded over living hair means bonding adhesive against follicles that are still working. In that situation we usually recommend waiting, or a clip-in topper if you want coverage without commitment.
Women's Hair Topper
A clip-in or bonded topper for women with a widening parting, thinning crown or post-partum and thyroid-related hair loss. Made to your parting, not a generic mould.
In its favour
- Silk or mono top so the parting looks like your own scalp
- Pressure-sensitive clips positioned to avoid traction on fragile hair
- Lengths from 10 to 22 inches, blended into your own ends
- Fully removable — nothing bonded unless you ask for it
Against it
- A topper does not work if the hair around your thinning area is no longer strong enough to hold clips. Clip attachment relies on healthy anchor hair, and forcing clips into fragile hair causes exactly the traction damage you are trying to avoid. If your loss is diffuse across the whole scalp, a full wig is the safer route.
- It is also the wrong answer during the peak of post-partum shedding if you want a bonded piece. We will fit clip-in during that phase and re-check at three months, but we will not bond onto a scalp that is actively shedding.
How we would decide it with you
At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.
Both options above are things we make, so there is nothing for us to gain by steering you. The wrong specification costs us a remake and costs you a year, which is why we template before we quote.
Still not sure which?
Tell us your stage of loss and we'll give you a straight recommendation between these two — including when the answer is neither.
Custom Hair System vs Women's Hair Topper — FAQs
- Custom Hair System or Women's Hair Topper — which is better?
- Neither is universally better. A patch assumes a defined bald area with healthy hair around it and is usually bonded. A topper assumes a widened parting with diffuse thinning and is usually clipped, because the hair underneath is still there and still growing.
- Which costs more, hair system or hair topper?
- Custom Hair System: $600 – $1,800. Women's Hair Topper: $700 – $2,200. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
- Can I switch from one to the other later?
- In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
