Comparison
Custom Hair System vs Custom Toupee
BeforeAfterThe short answer
It is a coverage decision, not a quality decision
A patch covers a defined area — usually the crown or mid-scalp — and blends into the hair still growing around it. A toupee covers front to crown and has to have a hairline designed for it. Neither is the better product; they solve different amounts of loss.
The mistake we correct most often is a crown patch bought while the front is still receding. Within a year the patch is dense and the temples are not, and the mismatch is more obvious than the original loss was. If your recession has passed the mid-scalp, order the toupee now and skip the intermediate purchase.
Side by side
| Custom Hair System | Custom Toupee | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $600 – $1,800 | $900 – $2,400 |
| Turnaround | 12–15 days for a fully custom order, or same-day with a stock base | 12–15 days fully custom |
| Best for | Men with crown or mid-scalp thinning who want density back without surgery or medication. | Men at Norwood 4 and above who need front-to-crown coverage rather than a crown system. |
| Wrong choice if | A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now. | A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown-only hair system is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. |
The case for each
Custom Hair System
A made-to-order hair system cut to a mould of your own scalp, matched to your existing hair in colour, density, curl and hairline shape. Non-surgical, reversible and ready to wear the same day it is fitted.
In its favour
- Scalp template taken by hand, so the system sits flat with no lifting at the edges
- Hair matched from a cut sample of your own hair — colour, grey percentage, wave and shine
- Choose skin, mono, lace or a hybrid base depending on how much you sweat
- Fitted, cut and styled in one sitting so you walk out finished
Against it
- A crown or mid-scalp system is the wrong purchase if your loss has already reached the front hairline. Covering a crown while the temples keep receding creates a visible density mismatch that no amount of styling hides, and you will be paying to replace it with a full toupee within a year. If your recession is past the mid-scalp, order the toupee now.
- It is also the wrong purchase if you are in the early diffuse stage with hair still covering the area. A system bonded over living hair means bonding adhesive against follicles that are still working. In that situation we usually recommend waiting, or a clip-in topper if you want coverage without commitment.
Custom Toupee
A full custom toupee — a front-to-crown hair system — for men with larger frontal and mid-scalp loss. Same made-to-measure process as our crown systems, with a wider coverage area and a front hairline built to your face shape.
In its favour
- Front hairline designed to your temple recession and forehead height
- Graded density: light at the front, fuller through the mid-scalp
- Bleached knots at the parting so no dark dots show under light
- Two-unit rotation option so you always have a dry, clean one to wear
Against it
- A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown-only hair system is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
- It is also the wrong choice if you are unwilling to commit to a hairline decision. A toupee lives or dies on its front, and the front has to be designed to your temple recession and forehead height. If you want something you can take off casually with no hairline to manage, a clip-in system suits you better.
How we would decide it with you
At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.
Both options above are things we make, so there is nothing for us to gain by steering you. The wrong specification costs us a remake and costs you a year, which is why we template before we quote.
Still not sure which?
Tell us your stage of loss and we'll give you a straight recommendation between these two — including when the answer is neither.
Custom Hair System vs Custom Toupee — FAQs
- Custom Hair System or Custom Toupee — which is better?
- Neither is universally better. A patch covers a defined area — usually the crown or mid-scalp — and blends into the hair still growing around it. A toupee covers front to crown and has to have a hairline designed for it. Neither is the better product; they solve different amounts of loss.
- Which costs more, hair system or toupee?
- Custom Hair System: $600 – $1,800. Custom Toupee: $900 – $2,400. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
- Can I switch from one to the other later?
- In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
